What is rTMS?

How it works

rTMS (repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation) is a non-invasive method in which magnetic pulses act on the brain areas involved in regulating mood. In depression these areas are often underactive; rTMS stimulates them and helps restore the brain's usual balance of activity.

About 20 minutes a session

A session takes about 20 minutes (the first about 40, while your individual motor threshold is set). You stay fully awake, and afterwards you can go straight back to your day - and drive yourself.

A comfortable procedure

You sit calmly in a comfortable chair, fully conscious - you can rest, listen to music or simply relax.

An evidence-based method

The US FDA cleared rTMS for treating depression in 2008. According to meta-analyses, about 50-60% of patients whom antidepressants had not helped achieve a significant reduction in symptoms after a full course. Results are individual - we cannot guarantee them.

Why Neuropulsas

30 sessions in one week

With the accelerated protocol - six sessions a day with breaks in between - the full 30-session course fits into five working days. It suits patients travelling from abroad; the doctor confirms your schedule.

Psychiatrists and neurologists

rTMS is prescribed and supervised by psychiatrists and neurologists trained in rTMS. Every session is set individually: your motor threshold and the stimulation targets.

  5. Reviewing the results

Your condition is reviewed every 10 sessions, and the plan is adjusted if needed.

Safety

Well tolerated

During a session you feel tapping on your head and hear a clicking sound (earplugs are provided). For most patients the procedure is not painful.

Possible side effects

Most often a mild headache or discomfort where the stimulation is applied, which usually passes within the first sessions. Serious side effects, such as seizures, are very rare - which is exactly why a doctor's consultation comes first.

A safety check before treatment

The doctor checks for a history of epilepsy or seizures, head injuries or brain surgery, and for metal implants in the head or neck, a pacemaker or other implanted devices. None of these is an automatic "no" - the doctor decides.

Frequently asked questions

How much does treatment cost?

The doctor's consultation costs €100. The accelerated programme - 30 sessions over five working days - costs €2,900. The programme price covers treatment only; travel and accommodation are not included.

Do I need to speak Lithuanian?

No. Consultations and sessions are available in English.

Can the first consultation be held online?

Yes. The first consultation can take place online, before you travel. After it we agree your accelerated schedule - 30 sessions over five working days. Please book your travel only once the dates are confirmed.

Why 30 sessions, and how do they fit into one week?

30 sessions is the international standard used in clinical studies and treatment guidelines: the brain needs a therapeutic dose of pulses, and the changes build up through repetition. The accelerated protocol gives six sessions a day with breaks in between, so the full course fits into five working days. The doctor confirms whether it suits you.

Can I keep taking my medication?

Usually yes - antidepressants, for example, are generally compatible, and rTMS is most often an addition to your current treatment. The doctor reviews your medicines at the consultation; never stop or change them on your own. The best and most stable results are often achieved by combining rTMS with psychotherapy.

Does it hurt?

For most patients, no. You feel tapping on your head and hear a clicking sound (earplugs are provided). A mild headache or discomfort, if it occurs, usually passes within the first sessions.

When will I notice a difference?

It differs from person to person: some people notice a change during the course, others only after the full course. Feeling no difference after a few sessions is normal.

Is this electroconvulsive therapy?

No. rTMS is not electroconvulsive therapy: no anaesthesia is needed, the procedure does not cause seizures, you stay awake the whole time, and you can drive yourself afterwards. rTMS is not associated with memory problems.

Who is rTMS not suitable for?

rTMS may not be suitable if you have had epilepsy or seizures, a head injury or brain surgery, or if you have metal implants in your head or neck, a pacemaker or another implanted device. None of these is an automatic "no" - the doctor decides at the consultation. Questions about pregnancy are also for the doctor.

What should I send before the consultation?

Your diagnosis and a short medical history; your current and past medication (doses and effect); previous treatment (psychotherapy, hospital stays, earlier TMS or ECT); any seizures, head injuries, operations or implants; and doctors' letters if you have them. If you don't have everything, send what you have. No diagnosis yet? That's fine - the psychiatrist will assess your condition at the consultation.

Will my insurance pay for it?

Private health insurance may cover it, depending on your policy - we cannot guarantee it. We provide every document your insurer needs: the invoice, the doctor's report and a certificate about rTMS.
